Debra Tendrich collects more honors for anti-domestic violence legislation, advocacy
Democratic Rep. Debra Tendrich’s work against domestic violence is drawing another round of recognition. Tendrich received honors from Palm Beach County advocates and two cities during Domestic Violence Awareness Month. She has also been invited to represent the nonprofit Dress for Success, which assists women seeking economic independence. On Oct. 1, Palm Beach County’s Domestic Violence Coordinated Community Response team honored Tendrich at its opening ceremony with a plaque crediting her advocacy for survivor protections and accountability. Her home city of Lake Worth Beach followed Oct. 6, when Tendrich addressed the City Commission and received a proclamation designating October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Riviera Beach issued a separate proclamation recognizing Tendrich’s advocacy, her legislative record (particularly on domestic violence) and her community involvement. The proclamation, sponsored by Councilperson Shirley Lanier and signed by Mayor Douglas Lawson, also highlighted Tendrich’s nutrition and food-assistance nonprofit, Eat Better Live Better. Dress for Success, which assisted Tendrich after she fled to Florida with her daughter to escape abuse in 2012, has invited her to serve as an honorary 2027 ambassador. Tendrich’s Office said she traveled to New York City to speak at the organization’s Women Who Inspire luncheon. She has also returned over the years to speak with women facing difficult circumstances, including those leaving abusive partners. “I often tell the women I meet that if I can go from being a domestic violence survivor to a State Representative, there is no limit to what they can achieve,” Tendrich said. “Where you begin does not have to determine where you end up.” Tendrich successfully sponsored legislation this year to increase penalties for repeat domestic violence offenders and relocation assistance for victims. The measure also included protections against threats involving pets and two electronic-monitoring pilot programs for offenders, one in Pinellas County and one in the Sixth Judicial Circuit. The YWCA of Palm Beach County previously named Tendrich its 2026 Harmony Hero Award recipient. She is set to receive the award Oct. 15 at the organization’s Living in Harmony Luncheon. Her other honors include the Florida League of Cities’ Legislative Appreciation Award in May and an Elected Official of the Year nod from the National Association of Social Workers’ Florida chapter in June, following similar recognition from its Palm Beach affiliate. She also received recognition from the Palm Beach County Police Benevolent Association and the county Domestic Violence Coordinated Community Response team’s 2025 Domestic Violence Impact Award in the Community Leader category.
